Not-for-profit community aged care provider Millmerran Centenary Retirement Village (Yallambee) has celebrated a major milestone with its largest ever construction project in 33 years reaching the halfway mark.
The transformational $6.5 million project includes the addition of 20 new rooms and complete refurbishment of the existing Yallambee hostel.
We are pleased to have reached this significant milestone in this important project for the Millmerran district. The work we are doing will see us keep pace with the growing demand for high care beds.
We are at the halfway mark with the extension scheduled for completion by the end of the year. This will be followed by the full refurbishment of the old facility which includes a new commercial kitchen, laundry, and other associated operational areas.
Board of Management President Mr John Rogers
Yallambee is currently home to 44 residents and, with 21 dementia specific places, is largely a high care facility.
When Yallambee was originally built we were primarily a retirement village. However, as more and more people are choosing to stay in their homes for longer it means their care needs are higher when they come to us.
This significant investment ensures we have the appropriate facilities and equipment to expand and continue to provide first class care for our residents. – John Rogers
Mr Rogers said while much had changed in the aged care sector over the more than three decades of service to the community, the one thing which had not changed was Yallambee’s focus on the wellbeing and safety of residents in its care.
We are proud of our 60 dedicated staff, the majority of whom reside in our community, and their commitment to providing the best quality care to our residents and service to their families.
Mr Rogers said the construction project was being professionally delivered by award-winning Darling Downs builder Northbuild Construction, which is currently undertaking major projects in Toowoomba including the City Hall auditorium and annexe, the Toowoomba Grammar School stadium and a new building for Highfields Gardens Childcare Centre.
Northbuild Regional Manager, Andrew Civil said all contractors working on the Yallambee project were Toowoomba locals.
Given our presence in Toowoomba since 2011, it is pleasing to be working on local projects like Yallambee which are contributing to the growth of the region and delivering important community services. – Mr Civil said.
He said Northbuild has taken particular care to ensure minimal disruption to the residents of Yallambee, as the project moves through the various stages of completion.
There are a lot of daily logistics to ensure Yallambee can maintain normal operations while we are building. We communicate and plan logistics on a day-to-day basis, working closely with the Yallambee team to make sure there is a smooth transition from one stage to the next, he said.
The total project is scheduled for completion in June 2018.
